Sketch Report : 23 Sept – National Military Memorial Park

The National Memorial Park – in Vasanth Nagar – is a tribute to the Indian martyrs and soldiers who have fought in the 4 most important Indian wars and battles. The tribute has the names of the fallen soldiers etched into marble stone from the various regiments, so wonderfully displayed – a reminder of the great price we have paid for our freedom. Ever so often, in our sketching efforts we do get to go to capture the forgotten history of this city and this country – that aptly enables us to understand and grow fonder of this city.

Besides the prominent tribute to the soldiers, there were TANKS!!! 4 decommissioned tanks stood magnificently all around – we couldn’t pass up on sketching these.

Look out for next weeks sketchmeet –

Sketchmeet 15 Sept : Bangalore Cantonment Railway Station

This week we took to sketching one of the most historical parts of the city – the 150 year old Bangalore Cantonment Railway Station – the station has a unique feature of beautiful pink arches separating its 2 platforms.

We set out to sketch these arches- our main aim for setting up this sketch meet,  among the other things we were able to catch some trains that had halted at the station, and of course the passengers travelling through. Trains and stations have always been an object of wonder – from the intricate engine designs, to the complex station architecture and perspectives, we had a wonderful time getting these to paper.

Sketchmeet 09 Sept : Sri Aurobindo Society

Hidden within the bustling city lies the Sri Aurobindo Society – a retreat from the noise and chaos that we are accustomed to. It was a wonderful outing for the sketchers – sketching the building and the sprawling garden.

Aug 04 : Sketchmeet at H Siddaiah Road

One of the aspects of Urban Sketching is the constant interaction with the environment where you stand sketching. We as sketchers are privileged to be observers and then story tellers – weaving tales with our pens and colours and brushes. H Siddaiah road – we decided was a story that had to be told, is full of such tales – an area of Bangalore that is bursting with people and mechanic shop. We gave it our best shot, although we don’t think we’ve managed to cover all aspects of capturing this street to paper.

A Saturday Morning is a slow morning for business, in this part of the town, we managed to have a bit of an audience watching us, wondering what a group of people like us were upto. It’s always interesting to interact with the subjects you sketch, you don’t quite know what to expect from them – these shop owners couldn’t believe we gathered here out of free will, to spend our saturdays drawing and sketching and painting – they were amused to know that we do this every week, and then obliged to help us take our group photo at the end of the meet.

Our morning meet, extended into a lunch date at the Courtyard Cafe – which just meant a whole lot of sketches, discussion, sharing of sketches and food – there is no better combination than that.

Catch our stories and follow the sketchers on their take of H Siddaiah Street :

SketchMeet at Siddaiah Street

We did have that moment again, when we asked “What do we draw”, how best to represent this area?” to which our fellow sketcher Hemant answered : Draw Everything

Here are our sketches, check out the sketches on our USK Bengaluru Instagram and USK Bengaluru Facebook page as well

July 21 – Sketchmeet at Venkatappa Art Gallery

We took on  the mighty Venkatappa Art Museum this weekend. One of the oldest in the city, it boasts a rich tradition, very well kept courtyard – with artifacts, stone works and recovered sculptures spread across. It holds the artworks of Karnataka’s beloved artist K. Venkatappa. In addition to serving as a museum, it is also an art gallery for artists all around to exhibit their works

Sketching the complex grand structure, under the constant threat of rain meant we had to work fast and quickly – we had to do away with those intricate details which make historic buildings interesting, but we did manage to get in some of it in our sketches.
